Last Friday I got an awesome massage before heading to a vinyasa yoga class, fully oiled.
I felt like a greased pig trying to do yoga, sliding around everywhere.
I have students who complain of sliding on their mats, and though it was funny to experience it during one class, I can’t imagine slipping on my yoga mat all the time. No fun.
Several yoga studios recommend YogaToes, which is a slip-resistant towel that covers your mat (or part of it, if you get the smaller size). YogaToes has to be wet to work well, otherwise it slides around on top of your mat. Also, it doesn’t completely solve the problem of sliding on your mat, it just reduces it. YogaToes is certainly better than a regular towel, but by how much?
If you only slide in poses once in awhile, say after a massage, my recommendation is simply to put a yoga strap across your mat to press into in poses like downward dog.
But if this is a chronic problem, there is an all-natural yoga mat that really is non-slip. It’s the Jadeyoga mat, made of open cell natural rubber. My neighbor in the vinyasa class had one, because she is a slider. My sister-in-law uses the same mat for the same reason — you just don’t slide.
At 3/16 of an inch thick, the Jade yoga mat is just slightly thicker than a standard mat, and it doesn’t offer the dense support of the Manduka. But if slipping and sliding on your mat is your biggest concern, this is the mat for you.
Priced around $50 it’s not exactly cheap, but if you have a regular practice, that’s just about 14 cents a day for a year. Not bad at all, and certainly a better deal than a glorified towel.
Get your skidless Jade yoga mat here from the Y Catalog which will give 10% of the sale to Trees for the Future, or here from Amazon.
Had to laugh at the picture of slipping on your mat! This is my biggest pet peeve about cheap yoga mats- they are suppose to help you not slip nit make floor “squishy-er” I gladly pay top dollar for a mat that helps me keep my pose!
What kind of mat do you use?
I have to say, my muscles got more of a workout when they had to stay so much more involved to keep me in place. I think I’d be quite a bit stronger if I didn’t use a mat at all, but my knees and wrists would be very unhappy.
Thanks for stopping in!
